Deep Space Rumble: THE PRESTIGE
Let me make a pledge to you; THE PRESTIGE is the kind of movie that keeps us going to the movies, you will love it. I hesitate to go into too much detail because much of it turns on the various plot twists. Let's start with the acting. I have been disappointed by Hugh Jackman in the past. I think he sleepwalked through Swordfish and Van Helsing fell far short of my expectations, but in THE PRESTIGE he is absolutely convincing. Christian Bale has always been one to watch, and here the fascination is to watch him dissolve into the role so that I was no longer seeing Bale performing, but was seeing only his character. Jackman and Bale play rival magicians. Their rivalry is central to the film and these two actors pull it off famously, and is the reason this film works for me so well. Also featured in the film is David Bowie as my favorite mad scientist Nikola Tesla, in his Colorado Springs laboratory. Bowie gives Tesla an air of dignity I wish his later years truly had. To be brief this movie is highly recommended. It has magic and revenge as central themes. Throw in a few Tesla coils and lost technology and more plot twists than I can remember and you have the kind of movie that I want to see three or four times, just to detect the nuances that I know I missed.
